Starting childcare at a new service: A family guide

Starting at a brand-new childcare service means everyone is new - and that’s something special. As we prepare to welcome families into Charlestown, our newest TGA centre, we wanted to take a moment to share what families can expect when starting at a brand-new service, and how we support children, families, and our new team through those important early weeks.

Starting childcare is a significant milestone for both children and families. Whether it’s your first experience in early learning or you’re transitioning from another service, this change can bring a mix of excitement, curiosity, and sometimes a few nerves.

A new centre is more than a new building - it’s a fresh beginning. From the learning environments to daily routines, every detail has been intentionally designed with children at the centre of every decision.

At our upcoming Charlestown service, we’ve focused on creating warm, welcoming spaces where children feel safe, curious, and confident from their very first visit. While new environments can take time to adjust to, they also offer wonderful opportunities for exploration, friendship, and growth.

What we do in the early weeks

The first few weeks of a new centre are intentionally slow, responsive, and relationship-focused. Our priority is not rushing into routines, but building strong and secure foundations.

For children:

Our educators spend time observing, listening, and learning who they are. What comforts them, what sparks their curiosity, and how they communicate their needs? We place strong emphasis on attachment, ensuring each child builds secure relationships with familiar educators who become their safe base in the environment.

For families:

We prioritise open communication and genuine partnership. Those early conversations go beyond routines - they are about understanding your child as an individual. We check in regularly, share how the day has been, and work closely with you to support smooth and confident separations at drop-off.

Behind the scenes:

We are also building something equally important - our team culture. In a new service, educators are learning alongside one another. We intentionally take time to reflect together, establish shared expectations, and build consistency in practice. This includes regular team check-ins, mentoring, and collaborative planning, ensuring every educator feels confident, supported, and empowered in their role.

A new centre is as much about growing a team as it is about welcoming children. We focus on fostering a culture of respect, reflection, and continuous learning, where educators are encouraged to bring their strengths, ideas, and individuality into the service from day one.

Settling in: what the first days can look like

Every child’s transition looks different. Some walk in confidently on day one, while others prefer a slower, more gradual approach. Both are completely normal.

In the early days, you may notice:

  • A need for extra comfort or reassurance at drop-off

  • Increased curiosity about new educators, children, and routines

  • Tiredness after big emotional and sensory experiences

  • Gradually growing confidence as familiarity builds

Our educators are experienced in supporting these transitions and take time to get to know each child’s individual needs, interests, and comfort strategies.

Building trust takes time

One of the most important parts of starting childcare is building strong, trusting relationships — between educators, children, families, and our wider team.

We encourage families to share as much as possible with us: what comforts your child, their routines at home, their interests, and anything that helps them feel secure. These small but meaningful details make a big difference in helping children feel understood and supported.

We also believe in open, ongoing communication. Families are always welcome to ask questions, share concerns, or simply check in on how their child is settling.

A new chapter for Charlestown families

We are incredibly excited about our Charlestown centre opening and creating a strong, connected community where children are supported to learn, play, and thrive from the very beginning of their early learning journey.

It is a privilege to be part of these early moments in a child’s life. We look forward to welcoming families, building strong relationships, and watching children grow in confidence as they settle into their new environment.

We hope this guide helps you feel more prepared and supported as you begin your journey with us.
