What happens when children see their culture reflected in their learning environment? They feel proud. They feel confident. They feel like they belong. Centre Director Zeinab shares why recognising cultural traditions helps children feel seen, valued and proud of who they are.
As the Centre Director of our Belfield centre (a community rich in culture, language and tradition) I see every day how important these moments are for our children, families and community.
While each celebration is special in its own way, what matters most is the opportunity it gives us to come together, learn from one another and build a strong sense of belonging in our centre.
Learning Through Shared Experiences
When we acknowledge cultural festivals in simple, age-appropriate ways, children have the chance to:
Learn about traditions that are important to their friends
Become curious about similarities and differences
Share stories about their own families
Ask questions and have open conversations
These experiences often lead to lovely, natural discussions. Children begin to understand that not every family celebrates the same way - and that’s something to respect and appreciate.

Supporting Identity and Belonging
For many families, seeing their culture reflected in the classroom helps their child feel proud and valued. It shows them that their traditions are recognised and welcomed here.
For other children, it’s a chance to learn about something new. Through these small but meaningful moments, children begin to develop empathy and understanding for the world around them.
In early childhood, these lessons happen through everyday experiences such as through play, art, music and conversation. It doesn’t need to be complicated to be meaningful.

Why It Matters
At our Belfield centre, and all Grove Academy centres, celebrating cultural events is part of creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.
When children grow up seeing diversity celebrated, they learn to:
Respect different perspectives
Show kindness
Feel confident in who they are
Build positive relationships with others
These are foundations that support children well beyond their early years.
In a culturally diverse suburb like Belfield, this work is especially meaningful. Our centre reflects the richness of our surrounding community, and we intentionally create spaces where that diversity is visible, respected and celebrated.
For us, it’s not just about celebrating special dates. It’s about creating a diverse community where every child and every family feels seen, respected and valued.
And that’s something we’re very proud of.
